Recently, the Raw Material Industry Division of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China held a symposium on the development of the graphene industry in Beijing. During the meeting, representatives exchanged ideas on the development, scale production, and industrialized application of the graphene materials and also made an analysis of the principal problems facing the development of the industry. Professionals revealed that the great attention and promotion government has given will benefit the tire industry a great deal.
Tire industry’s optimism about graphene
As “king of new material”, graphene has been greatly favored by a large number of industries both at home and abroad in the past two years. It’s reported that graphene is something that is stripped from the graphite materials and it is a material with the highest strength, toughness, lightest in weight, highest light transmittance, and best conductive performance so far.
The material, according to the analysis, will be utilized in the future more and more in intelligent terminal, new energy vehicles, composite processing, intelligent wear products，clean energy and other fields. The unique structure and function of graphene has also aroused the attention of the people with vision in the tire industry.
According to the insiders, the use of graphene in the tire production can make tires more wear resistant and puncture resistant and greatly improve the service life. Some research institutions just took advantage of the properties to set the first foot in the research and application. The state key laboratory of Polymer materials engineering in Sichuan University has already dependently developed the world’s first graphene tire. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang made a special visit to the tire in the lab during his inspection visit to Sichuan.
Domestic tire manufactures are also unwilling to lag behind. Not long ago, Double star Tire has set up the first graphene tire lab. Then Ling long Tire has also signed a contract with Beijing University of Chemical Technology for a joint research and development of new tire materials like graphene.
Large-scale application a long way to go
Journalists learn that the new material graphene currently faces a great variety of problems like the construction and protection of intellectual property rights, the formulation of the norms of industry, as well as the demonstration application promotion and improvement of the industry chain.
The problems also drew attention of the relevant state departments. In January, 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) organized a forum on the application technology of graphene in a bid to push the industrialized application of the new material.
In May, 2016, MIIT held another symposium on the industry development of graphene and had in-depth discussions about some hot issues like the industrialized promotion of graphene in the past two years and proposed innovation center of graphene.
Reportedly, after 2013, promoted by policies, it saw a period of fast development of domestic graphene market with predominant potential for development and application. According to a data from abroad, as of early 2015, among 25,000 pieces of patent applications in the use of graphene, nearly one third came from China.
The graphene of China is still in the early stage of industrialization, and has not yet fully realized the large-scale application. The greatest demand for graphene currently still comes from those scientific and research institutions and a small number of manufacturers. According to the analysis of professionals, with the increasing boom of research and industrialization promotion of graphene in China, the new material can be expected to be more used in the downstream products and other fields in the next three to five years.
Another big application is in the battery field. Since it has the best conductive performance so far, once used in new energy vehicles, a 15-minute charging will make the car go about 1000 kilometers. That is amazing!
Comments: As a new material, the graphene will be used in the production of tire (8%-10%) in the future on large scale. The tires with this material will be more wear resistant and puncture resistant, and greatly improve the service life!
